U.S. Congressman. Successful in mercantile pursuits, he was postmaster of Southboro, Massachusetts, (1817-32), a deputy sheriff in Worcester County, (1824-30) and a member of the Massachusetts General Court, (1830-31). He also represented in the Massachusetts General Court, (1834-36, 40) and served in the Massachusetts State Senate, (1843-45, 48). In 1852, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Robert Rantoul Jr., serving until 1853. Not a candidate or reelection, he was Mayor of Chelsea, in 1857, founded the Massachusetts State reform school in Lancaster, 1858 and was again a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, in 1868. After leaving politics, he lived in retirement until his death at age 83.
