During the war between the states, he served as Surgeon, Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, in charge of hospitals at Richmond and Lynchburg.
Appointed New Orleans Quarantine Inspector in 1878, and appointed to the same position in Morgan City 1890 - 1895. Inspector of the board of health.
The 1880 federal census lists his family in New Orleans as follows:

Sarah- daughter- 14
Mary B.- daughter- 3
Survived by his wife, a son, and two daughters.
