Iris Roberta Cole,78 of Beulah died Sunday at the Maples surrounded by her family.
She was born on Oct. 12,1922,in Bear Lake, the daughter of Clarence and Minnie (Six)Mattison.

She was well known in Benzie County for her spunk, and loving nature to animals. She was a farmer, and was mainly known to love horses, especially her ponies.Iris taught many children to ride the ponies she loved. Her favorite hobbies were fishing, hunting and for many years was a participant in the National Coho Festival parade in Honor,MI.with her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.Iris was baptized at the Bible Baptist Church in Montague.
Iris is survived by her daughters,Annabelle M. Moore of Michigan, Barbara A. Dougherty of Beulah and Carrie E. (Gary) Smith of Sparta,Tenn.;six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren;her brother,Wilbur Collingwood of Thompsonville; 3 stepchildren; 3 neices; 2 nephews,5 great nieces; and 4 great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her son Edgar in 1996.
Funeral Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah with Pastor Dan Ingersoll.
A special "Thank You" to the Maples Facility in Frankfort for the kindness and warmth that they shared with us, to accommodate the large family, for them to stay by her side.

Mom had a hard life, nothing came easy to her, she raised 4 children, being mother and father.
She made sure all of us had schooling, something she did not get as a child, leaving 3rd grade to care for grandma Minnie til she passed away.By then Grand dad didn't feel schooling was important,so mom never got to return to school.
I remember when I was about 12, I finally did get to teach mom to read a little bit,and write her name, but I think she only learned, so she was sure I could read and write.
I think of her every day wish with all my heart she was still here.
Please take a minute and add a flower for my brother.
Edgar Cole

A very special heartfelt thank you goes to Mary Tootle for the following poem she wrote for my mom.

For Iris
Beneath the bright and silent moon,
I look upon the night.
I think about the silence,
Gaze at the stars so bright.
How can it seem so perfect?
So balanced, exactly in its place?
All things lined up,
With nothing out of place.
While here on earth you wonder,
If your world will ever be right again.
It turned upside down one October,
When God took your sweet Mom's hand.
Since then you think of her hard life,
How she grew up and struggled with life's trials,
But if you ever asked her,
I'll bet there were also smiles.
If she never wrote or read a lot,
On history she still left her mark.
Her legacy surrounds you,
Her life had meaning from the start.
So don't mourn the loss of Mama,
Praise God for the time she had.
Your time with his Angel was precious,
And your tears will make her sad.

~~ In Our Hearts ~~
We thought of you with love today,
But that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday.
And days before that too.
We think of you in silence.
We often speak your name.
Now all we have is memories.
And your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keepsake.
With which we'll never part.
God has you in his keeping.
We have you in our heart.
