From Holland St. John "Joseph Elmer (he went by his middle name Elmer) was the son of Joseph Armstrong and Elizabeth Mae "Lizzie" (Jones) Smith and was born on November 6, 1900 in Grangeville, Idaho County, Idaho. His parents had both been married previously. His father and first wife Rebecca had two children: William and John. His mother and her first husband James E. Smith had five children: Eva Allene, Archie Noble, Bertha E., Lauren Franchion "Lottie", and George Wiliam. All these half-brothers and sisters were born in Posey County, Indiana. By the beginning of 1900 his parents married and moved to the state of Idaho where his father established a farm near the community of Grangeville, Idaho County, Idaho. Both Elmer's parents had lost their spouses through deaths when they were living in Indiana. Elmer's father passed away on November 23, 1907 when he was just seven years of age. Little information has been found about the years that Elmer grew to manhood. It is known that he married on November 13, 1924 Julia Melissa Shinn at Grangeville, Idaho. The records of Idaho Marriages 1842-1996 on file at the County Courthouse located in Idaho County list the name as Joseph E. Cash (not using his middle name Elmer). The couple had one child: Roy Allen Cash who was born in June 22, 1925 and died in 2007. Julia passed away in 1956 in Idaho County and Elmer died in February of 1982 in Ellensburg, Kittitas County, Washington. His remains were returned to Grangeville where he was laid to rest at the side of his wife Julia in the Prairie View Cemetery located in Grangeville, Idaho County, Idaho."
