MRS. GRACE GRAHAM ACKLEY, NEWSWOMAN

Newspapering was a man's world in the late 1920s and 1930s but did not stop businesswoman Grace Graham Ackley from reaching the top with an agressive style that delighted her friends and stymied her foes.

Mrs. Ackly, whose last assignment was as a business consultant to the Miami News in 1941 and 1942, died Monday in Coral Gables.

The young woman was working as a purchasing agent at the now defunct New York Journal-American in 1932 when she was recruited by a national newspaper engineering consultant company.

Twelve years later her career culminated when she became assistant to the president of The Philadelphia Evening Ledger. "I saw you in action and was so impressed with your work, I wanted you to become my Right Hand Man", Ledger President, George Kearney wrote in a 1941 letter to Mrs. Ackley.

"You kick 'em and you flayed them but I noticed universal regret over your leaving. No one here doubted you know your stuff" Kearney wrote.

Agreed Mrs. Ackley's niece, Bettyjane Reiss of Miami. "She was a tiger" a career woman when it was not easy. She was a hard-living, hard-working woman in a man's world.

"She was loyal to her friends and impervious to her enemies, she had a quite number of both," Mrs. Reiss said.

Mrs. Ackley was born in Logan, Kansas, and spent her childhood in Kentucky and Florida, first moving to Miami in 1918. She married childhood sweethart Harry Barton Ackley of Louisville and divorce shortly thereafter, in the 1930s.

Services will be at 3:30PM, Friday at the Van Orsdel Coral Gables Chapel.
