Lennis Eugene Hill, 84, went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004 at Shoshone Medical Center in Kellogg. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Wallace Elks Lodge. Pastor Rob Sisson will be officiating.
Lennis was born Oct. 26, 1920 in Denton, Mont., the son of Joseph H. and Minnette (Fairchild) Hill. Lennis moved to Coeur d'Alene with his parents at the age of two. He attended school in Coeur d'Alene, graduating from Coeur d'Alene High school in 1938. Lennis also attended and graduated from Coeur d'Alene Junior College (now NIC) and from Kinman Business University of Spokane, Wash. He moved to the Silver Valley in 1942 from Coeur d'Alene. On February 26, 1944, he married Ruby Sinrud in Merced, Calif.
Lennis worked for Hecla Mining Company for 43-and-a­half years, first as a timekeeper in Burke, then transferring to the Red Cloud Mine in Hornitos, Calif. for two years, then as an accountant in Wallace until his retirement in 1985. He began his 73-year musical career with trumpet lessons at age 11, and learned to play by ear with his mother's help and by playing songs he heard on the radio. Lennis started playing for grange hall dances with his parents and with the Melody Boys while in high school, and has been playing professionally ever since; including the Len Hill Combo, the Sounds of Music, and more recently with the Coeur d'Alene Big Band. He also enjoyed playing in the Wallace Drum & Bugle Corps, the Kellogg Elks Band and the Kellogg Booster Band.
Lennis was a member of the Silverton Community Church; a 20-year member and past secretary /treasurer for the Wallace Youth Association; a member, past president, past secretary/treasurer of the Wallace Kiwanis Club; a member in various capacities of the Wallace Rotary Club; a 27-year member and past secretary/treasurer of the Shoshone County Fire District No. 1; a member and past president of the Wallace Senior Center. Lennis was a member of the board for Whispering Pines and Echo Pines Housing; a member and past chairman of the Advisory Council for Aging and Adult Services; a member of the Silver Valley Seniors; a member of the Shiba Boards; a member of the Masonic Lodge since 1945 and a member of the Wallace Elks since 1942. Lennis was a devoted volunteer for the Wallace Visitor Center, the Silver Wood Good Samaritan, and the United Crusade. Ruby and Lennis were honored with the Elks Co-Citizen of the Year in 2000-2001. Lennis especially loved and enjoyed being with his family, golfing, bowling, and skiing until the age of 82, water skiing, ham radio, growing tomatoes, RVing and fishing. Lennis was a loving son, husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and a friend to many.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Ruby Hill at the family home in Silverton; one son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Mickey Hill of Spokane, Wash.; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Bill Bunch of Spokane, Wash.; three grand­children, Stephanie Hill of Bellevue, Wash., Andrew Hill of McCall, and Amanda Bunch of Spokane, Wash.; one sister, Dorothy Peacock of Coeur d'Alene; one brother, Ira Hill of Modesto, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Cunningham of Spokane, Wash.; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation will be held after services. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Silver Wood Good Samaritan Center of Silverton; or to the Inland NW Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 28843, Spokane, Wash., 99228; or to the Silverton Community Church, c/o Catherine Owen, P.O. Box 2, Silverton, Idaho, 83867.
