Chicago, Oct. 22.-(INS)- Funeral services were held at Arntzen's Chapel here today for Harry R. Kern, assistant vice president of Hart, Schaffer & Marx, in charge of credits, who died Tuesday. Burial will be at Mattoon, Ill. Mr. Kern died from heart disease.
The following is taken from a Chicago newspaper in its recent account of the death of Harry R. Kern, former Mattoon man, who was buried in a crypt in the mausoleum in Dodge Grove cemetery this afternoon:
The dying request of Mr. Kern that his wife, Gladys Swarthout, singer with the Metropolitan and Ravinia operas, should not be informed of his death until after her concert in Steubenville, Ohio, was made known to the opera star upon her arrival in this city.
The widow of the clothing executive, who rushed to Chicago upon being informed of her husband's death at the Presbyterian hospital after a sudden heart attack, was met at the station by friends who told her of her husband's last wish. They were married in 1921.
Mr. Kern was born in Mattoon, Ill., on Dec. 29, 1879. He was educated at the University of Michigan, where he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. Coming to Chicago, he entered the employ of Marshall Field's wholesale house. Later he joined the firm of Hart, Schaffner & Marx, where he rose steadily to the position of assistant vice president in charge of credits, in which capacity he was acquainted with most of the leading clothing merchants in America.
Mr. Kern was a member of the University and Commonwealth Clubs and was active in association of commerce affairs, He was living with friends, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Howard, in Hubbard Woods. (The Daily Journal-Gazette - October 22, 1931)
