Signed by the Anaheim Angels in June 2002 to a one-year contract, he played college baseball for Chowan College of Murfreesboro, N.C. Burden became a four-year letterman at the college, where he set a school record in closings, and led the team in innings pitched (66) and strikeouts (76) in 2002, and was named the school's Male Athlete of the Year. He was the first Chowan College player to sign with a big league team since the school became a four-year college in 1992). He recorded nine strikeouts in 10 appearances, recording a 7.45 ERA in 2002. At the time of his death, he was already working out 2 days a week in order to be ready to go to Spring Training with the World Champion Angels. He was found dead in bed by his mother on Friday, December 6th, 2002.
