The 6th United States Cavalry, the only regular mounted unit formed during the Civil War, was organized at Pittsburgh PA and recruited from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York. Recruits, many of them being fresh immigrants right off the boat from Ireland, enlisted for five-year terms originally, with the enlistment term changed to three years when the unit was re-flagged as the 6th. The organization of the regiment followed the army's "new" model of three battalions, each with two squadrons, and each squadron formed of two companies. With an experienced cadre of Regulars assigned from the army's original mounted regiments, there was no election of officers or sergeants. Otherwise the regiment was recruited much the same as any other volunteer unit.
On September 12, the regiment mustered 607 men and moved to Bladensburg MD where it was mounted and equipped. By October 12, eight companies (B, D, E, F, G, H, I, and K) had been organized and marched to the Camp of Instruction, east of Washington DC. Sufficient recruits arrived to organize Company A on October 15, Company M and the regimental band on November 1, and Company C on December 23. (Company L did not join the regiment until July 13, 1862, near Harrison's Landing VA, after the Seven Days' Battles.)

I'm still researching George. I'm not sure about any of this. If you can help, please contact me.

George Wilson was born in Ireland and came to America in 1849. He fought with the 6th US Cavalry, Company M, and was injured at the Battle of Malvern in 1862 when a horse fell on him. He was honorably discharged in 1863 with a total disability. He was believed to have been married twice after his discharge. He procured a license to marry Susan Stevens, in Baltimore, MD on 6 Jul 1865 at Christ Church Parish, Chase and St. Paul Street (Episcopal), Baltimore, MD, but no return was ever made. He fathered at least one son through this union. He married his second wife, Alice McCullough, in Burlingame, Osage, Kansas on 9 Feb 1878. He had nine children through this marriage all born and raised in Scranton, Osage, Kansas. The family later moved to OH where George became a mail carrier employed at Coshocton, OH delivering mail to Roscoe, OH. In his final years, he entered the Massillon State Hospital in OH.

His family included younger brothers James and William Wilson and a sister Ann Jane who married a Hughes. He had another sister who married an Allen (surname).

Documents I have from Margery Alice Wilson, George's brother James Wilson, and Lewis Myers (Find A Grave #68014537) show George Wilson was married twice: first to a Susan prior to his marriage to Margery Alice McCullough. Margery Alice thought George had two sons with his first wife, George and James (probably named after his brother James). She thought his first wife was named Susan Stevens and lived in PA. When Margery Alice went to apply for George's pension, she discovered Susan had already applied for it which led to a lot of legal documents. I believe Susan Stevens Wilson aka Susan Wilson may have married a second time to Amos Duhamel. I believe James Henry Duhamel and George Sherman Duhamel may be the two sons of George Wilson from his prior marriage.
