In memory of the Hon. Samuel Ward Esq. formerly Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Afterward a delegate from that Colony at the General Congress in which station he died at Philadelphia of the smallpox, March 26, 1776, in the 51st year of his age.
His great abilities, his unshaken integrity, his ardor in the cause of freedom, his fidelity in the offices he filled induced the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations to erect this greatest testimony of their respect.
The remains of Governor Samuel Ward removed by his descendants from the First Baptist Church, Philadelphia, rest beneath this tablet. March 1860.
