U.S. Senator. Born the son of Continental Congressman Daniel Huger, he graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1798, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1799 and began to practice law in Charleston, South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives (1804-19), Brigadier General of South Carolina State Troops in 1814, judge of the circuit court (1819-30) and a member of the South Carolina State Senate (1830-32, 38-42). In 1843, he was elected as a State Rights Democrat to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John C. Calhoun and served until he resigned in 1845. After leaving the Senate, he was a delegate to the state-rights convention in 1852.
