Her family moved to Sidney in 1910. She attended school there and later moved to Helena. In 1925, while living in Helena, she was employed at various establishments as a waitress and cook. These included Eddie's, The Peter Pan Café and The Broadwater. Her last job was helping a banquet at FOE #16 on her 80th birthday. She was a member of the FOE, Cooks and Waitress Union, and Helena Senior Citizens.
In 1942, she married Walter G. Brannon in Boulder. He died on March 17, 1950.
Mattie enjoyed participation in arts and craft shows, crocheting, fishing, gardening, and especially enjoyed the close relationships with her friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Brannon, and daughter, Betty Carpenter of Great Falls. Survivors include five grandchildren — Roberta Campbell of Monesson, Pa., Victor Carpenter of Hoven, S.D., Tanya Berry of Great Falls, Pam Rausch of Meridian, Idaho, and Patsy Tangen of Great Falls; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are to be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, at Forestvale Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Peace Hospice of Montana, 1101 26th St. S., Great Falls, MT 59405. Retz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
