Josh played trumpet in the junior high school band, beginning a life-long love of music. At Carlsbad High School, he wrestled and ran track specializing in the hurdles. He placed 4th overall in the 110 Hurdles at the New Mexico State Track Meet his senior year.
Josh was an Eagle Scout who served on summer camp staff at Dowling Aquatic Base and completed a trek at Philmont in 1994. After graduating from Carlsbad High School in 1998, he attended college at Texas Tech University earning a degree in Bio-Chemistry. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Texas Tech School of Health Sciences. For the last two years he worked as a pharmacist for Walgreen's in Lubbock, Texas.
Josh's hobbies included bodybuilding and music. In recent years, his interest in music centered around perfecting his skills with the guitar.
Josh is survived by parents Becky and Jim Matthews of San Antonio, and his siblings with their families: Joel and Susie Carnes of Las Vegas, Neveda; Jeremiah and Sheryl Carnes of Midland; Jana Matthews and Julie Matthews of San Antonio. His father Jim Carnes and his grandparents Bill and Newma Carnes preceded him in death.
A memorial plaque for Josh will be placed in Resthaven Cemetery in Lubbock.
