William F. Bales, an old and respected citizen, and an ex-county commissioner, died at 11 o'clock p.m. on last Thursday night, September 7, 1899 at the home of J.O. Staats. He had been in poor health for quite awhile, and his death was not unexpected. He was born in this county in 1829. He resided on his farm, 1 1/2 miles southeast of Dana, until his wife died, and since then he lived with his children. Mr. Bales was well known to many of the people of this county. He was an honorable and upright citizen, and stood very high in the neighborhood where he resided all his life. He never wronged anyone and always lived a consistent Christian . No one would say ought against him. His record is clean, and he was esteemed very highly by those who knew him best, and he did not have a single enemy. His funeral occurred at 9:30 o'clock on last Sunday morning, after which the order of masons, of which he was an honorable and accepted member, took charge of the remains and buried him in the Bales Cemetery. The funeral procession was very long, being the largest seen in Helt Township for many years. The deceased left 3 daughters and 2 sons, all married.
