These photos came to me via the widowed husband of Ruby Beers Allgood. Ruby was the granddaughter of Joshua and Bridget's youngest child, Mary Amanda Hopkins Beers. The top two were identified as Bridget and Joshua.

Joshua also clearly appears in the lower right photo. The lower left photo has the same wrinkled rug, left side drape, and uneven line where the "ceiling" joind the back "wall". There is no photographer information on any of the four. The bottom two appear to have been taken by an itinerant photographer because of the rough nature of the background materials. As it happens, Joshua married his second wife in July 1862 a few months after daughter, Sarah Jane, married George Tooth in May 1862. My hypothesis is that these two photos were taken in honor of the coupling of these two couples.

Bridget's photo could not have been taken much before her death in 1861 because photography was pretty new. Notice how Bridget's clothing looks to be that of a previous generation, compared to the Civil War era garb of the woman on the arm of Joshua, believed to be the widow, Sarah D. Farley, Joshua's wife #2.

It is interesting to read between the lines. Myron and Ruby Allgood were avid family and local historians. Myron made elaborate family trees of Hopkins and Beers descendants, even going so far as to make his own copying paper, using blue print technology when nothing else was yet available. And Mary Amanda Hopkins Beers, Ruby's paternal grandmother, lived with Ruby and her father. Yet, no mention was made of wife #2. However, she shows up petitioning for a widow's pension based on Joshua's War of 1812 militia service and she and her sister attended Joshua in his final days. We can only guess that Sarah may not have been seen in a positive light by Joshua and Bridget's children.

Stone had been lying on the ground, having fallen from it's broken, tabbed, base. Reset by Susan and Lew Hopkins in ground in front of base, with pea gravel under it for drainage. Cleaned 2013-2014 by Susan, using instructions in Ohio Genealogical Society magazine. Susan also purchased a War of 1812 flag holder and moved the erroneous GAR holder to monument for Joshua's son, Joshua J, whose GAR marker had been badly damaged.
