Obituary
Hilda Annie Tanner was born in a parsonage home May 2, 1894 in McCook county, S.D. the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. J.W. Petersen. She spent her early childhood years in Minnesota, but had lived in Iowa continuously for more than twenty years prior to her death. She gave her heart to God and lived her life for Him and for humanity. She was deeply spiritual and keenly interested in all church activities, and with her mother, shared her father's labors, being especially gifted in prayer and special work.
It was during her father's pastorate at Ayrshire that she was woed and won by Arthur C. Tanner, a young business man of that place, taking the marriage vows, which were read by Dr. McBurney at the home of her parents, December 19, 1917. Here they spent four happy years of married life, moving to Clear Lake for two years, then to Curlew, which had since been their home. Several years ago disease fastened upon the young life, developing a year ago into carcinoma, involving the cerebellum, since which time when not away being treated by specialists, she had been cared for by the loved ones in home. Her sister Miss Grace, assuming the role of nurse until the midnight hour or March 13, 1928, when she told them "the Master is calling for me." and went to be with the Lord whom she loved and served. Leaving her devoted husband, her parents, sisters, brother, aged grandparents, uncles, aunts and a host of others near and dear to mourn her early demise. "She is not dead, she is just away: Blessed is the way of the helpers: the Companions of Christ." She passed away in the home of her parents, Excelsior, Iowa at the age of 33 years, 10 months and 11 days. Surviving are her husband, parents, three sisters; Mrs. Ira Miller, Webster City, Iowa; Mrs. Alfred Lyons, Ayrshire; and Miss Grace Petersen, Excelsior, and one brother Rev. J. Wesley Peterson, Lovilla, Iowa.
Funeral Services were conducted at Spencer on Thursday and were attended by a large concourse of friends, her pastor Rev. H.I. Phario, Curlew, delivered the sermon. The body was brought to Bristow on Saturday where services were held in the Reformed Church at 1:30 p.m. A large company of sympathizing friends and relatives being present. Rev. H.I. Phario was assisted by Rev. D. C. Perry and Rev. George Kramer, John Dawson, Rev. J. J. Gough, and Rev. A. Wubbena were also present. Six of her brothers-in-law, Gilbert, Ernest, Venice, John, Raymond and Clarence Tanner, acting as pall bearers bore her tenderly to her resting place at Oak Hill. We mourn not as those without hope.
