U.S. Congressman. He graduated from New London Academy, began teaching school at Hopewell Academy, in 1828 and also engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1842-45). In 1849, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first Congress, serving until 1851. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he later served as quartermaster and as paymaster for the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war, he returned to his agricultural pursuits until his death at age 82.
