| [Add A Photo] | |  | Thomas More, painted in 1527 by Hans Holbein the Younger. He wears the gold Collar of Esses with Tudor Rose badge. Many assume this was his chain of office as Lord Chancellor, even though he did not take that post until 1529. In Henry VIII's time it was used as a livery collar and awarded as a mark of loyalty to favored servants and courtiers. More may have received his as early as 1521, when he was knighted. It is said he insisted on wearing the chain even during his imprisonment in the Tower of London, sending it (along with his hair shirt) to his daughter Margaret the day before his execution. |
