Bernadine Mary Rusting was born in Zell, Groveland Township, Spink Co., South Dakota on 21 Sep 1902. She was the ninth of thirteen children born to Frank Christian and Bernardina Mary Kirchoff Rusting.

She joined the Dominican Order on Nuns and professed her first vows on 21 Nov 1921. Her final profession was on 21 Nov 1927.

Bernadine Mary Rusting was known as Sister Mary Vincentia till 1967 when was known as Sister Mary Bernadine Rusting.

Two other sisters from her birth family also joined the Dominican Order of Nuns at the Dominican Mother House in Mission San Jose. She was the last of three to die. Sister Mary Beniga (Anna Marie Rusting) and Sister Mary Anthony (Elizabeth Mary Rusting) proceded her in death.
