Sun Journal, December 17, 2003 (in part): On Monday, December 15, 2003, Avis Styron Gorges, beloved wife of William "Bill" Gorges, who departed this life in 1994, joined with her husband in the eternal peace of God and our savior Jesus Christ.
The eldest daughter of Wallace and Alexinia Styron of Hunting Quarters, (Atlantic, N.C.), Avis was born February 24, 1911, at the family home which her father built on Core Sound. The daughter of a fisherman, she worked in a fashion unknown to most Americans today, daily helping her mother and father raise her siblings, mend nets, cook meals, wash clothes and sew quilts.
In the 1920s, she won the county spelling bee in Beaufort, and often traveled with her family to visit relatives by boat in Pamlico County, since there were no roads. At a dance at Camp Davis, Carteret County, in 1941, she met her husband, a young army soldier stationed at the radar post there. A day later her future husband walked the long sandy path from Davis to Atlantic to court her and they later married in Tampa, FL, where Bill was stationed early in World War II.
In 1943, their first child, Victoria Ann, wife of Jerry Austin of Beaufort was born. In 1947; a second child, Virginia Lee, wife of Randy Talton of Newport was born. In 1953 her third child, William David, husband of Lynn Lancaster Gorges of New Bern was born.
Avis was a homemaker and loving mother, always busy making canned jams and figs, mending and making clothes, sewing quilts, punching rugs and tending her bountiful garden for many, many years. She also had the natural talent to play a harmonica flawlessly, totally by ear. She was the epitome of the ultimate self-sacrificial mother, giving always to friends and strangers alike without regards for herself and dedicating all she had to give for her family.
Bill and Avis celebrated their golden 50th anniversary in 1992, still as much in love then as when they first met. She was a remarkable woman, loved by any whoever met her, and blessed with the gifts of patience and pure unselfish kindness that would be the envy of any saint.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, eight grandchildren, (Alicia Austin Nelson, wife of Cliff Nelson of Beaufort, Tiana King John, wife of Robert "Skip" John of New Bern; G. Daryl Austin of Beaufort; Jason King of Boone; Joseph King of New Bern; William Christopher Gorges of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill; Mark Lancaster Gorges of New Bern; Nora Elizabeth Gorges of New Bern), and one great-grandchild, Kathryn Austin Nelson of Beaufort. She is also survived by her sister, Alma Fulcher, widow of Selby Fulcher, and her brother, Aron Styron, husband of Grace Goodwin Styron, both of Atlantic; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Her passing has left a void in many hearts that will never easily be filled, but the memory of her strength, dedication, wisdom and kindness will help all those whose souls she touched over the many years the Earth was blessed with her presence. "Let not your hearts be troubled, ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's House are mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And whither I go you know, and the way you know."
