Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served during the Civil War as a Sergeant in Company F, 38th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Opequan Creek, Virginia on September 19, 1864. His citation reads "Carried his flag to the most advanced position where, left almost alone close to the enemy's lines he refused their demand to surrender, withdrew at great personal peril, and saved his flag". His Medal was awarded to him on May 10, 1894, almost 30 years later.
