This community was sadden Tuesday by the sudden death of Miss Alice E Dobbin, 80, who had been a resident of State Center during her entire lifetime. Although Miss Dobbin has been ill for about 10 days, she had improved in health and late Monday afternoon had walked up town. She apparently became acutely ill during the night and had passed away when found in the morning by Mrs S A Zwilling with whom she had made her home for almost a year. Her passing was attributed to a heart attack.
Miss Dobbin was born February 9, 1868 at State Center, the daughter of John and Julia Dobbin. Her father was the founder of the bank in 1869, that is now known as the Central State Bank. Her mother was a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Miss Dobbin was educated in the State Center schools and was a member of the second class graduating from the local high school, the year 1885. She also attended Grinnell College.
In 1898, "Miss Alice" as she was affectionately known to a host of friends, entered the dry goods business with Susannah Milne. Following her partner's marriage, Miss Dobbin continued in the business by herself for a number of years.
She has been a prominent figure in the local Presbyterian Church which she joined on June 11, 1889. In August, 1918 she was elected secretary of the Presbyterian congregation and served in that capacity for many years. She was also a member of the Board of Trustees of that church and in 1938 she was chosen treasurer of the church, which position she filled most efficiently until the time of her death. She was a member of both the Women's Association and the Missionary Society of the church. She was also a member of Spinning Wheel Chapter, D.A.R. of Marshalltown, and a charter member of the Kensington Club here.
She is survived by one brother, Walter of San Antonio, Texas; three nephews, James Wier Dobbin of Chicago; Freeman Dobbin of Wichita, Kansas and John Dobbin of Atchison, Kansas; and two nieces, Dorothy Davis and Mildred Ball of Kansas City in addition to a number of cousins. Two brothers, Fred L and Ward, preceded her in death.
Funeral services for Miss Dobbin will be held Friday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev E R Mitchell officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery.
