The story is told that John Inglish is descendant of Thomas English. Thomas and his four sons fought in the Revolutionary War. One of these sons became so enraged at England that he said " To Hell with England from now on I will spell my name with an "I" And that is supposedly the beginning of the spelling of Inglish. The only records available to support this story is the 1790 census of Virginia, Thomas Inglish was listed in the Isle of Wright County and William Inglish in Richmond County.

The Inglish Cemetery has been flooded over the years and actual graves are no longer marked, though the cemetery location is known. Some stones, including this one, have been recovered.
