Emery was the fourth child of Asa Andrews & Temperance Colt Pelton. He married Emily M. Smith on 16 Apr 1845 in North Colebrook, Litchfield, CT. She was the daughter of Sylvester Smith and Laura Cowles.

Emery bought a farm near Powell (the area was called Greenwood from 1855 to 1872) from John and Benjamin Head on 9 Oct 1876. The Head brothers were among the first settlers in the area and established a large orchard which Emery continued to work.
Emery is a direct descendant of William Andrews, one of the original founders of Hartford and its first schoolmaster.
