US Senator, Tacoma Mayor. He served in the United States Senate from 1946 to 1953, as a representative of the state of Washington. He was defeated for re-election to the United States Senate by Henry M. Jackson in November 1952. He received his undergraduate education at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, before pursuing graduate studies in England and Germany. Prior to serving in the U.S. Senate, he served as mayor of Tacoma, Washington from 1940 to May 1943 and again from 1945 to 1946. In May 1943 he took a leave of absence from his mayoral duties to serve in the United States Army. He fought in the Pacific Theater during the Second World War, attaining the rank of major. Following hostilities in Europe he returned to Washington state where he resumed and completed his term as mayor. In 1957 he moved to Florida where he became active in banking and civic affairs. He died at the age of 73.
