U.S. Congressman. Moving to Michigan with his parents, in 1891, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1899 and commenced to practice law in Battle Creek, Michigan. He was circuit court commissioner of Calhoun County, (1901-03), prosecuting attorney of Calhoun County, (1903-07) and city attorney of Battle Creek, (1916-18). In 1925, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-ninth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Arthur B. Williams, reelected to the Seventieth Congress and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving until his death.
