Colonel 22nd VA.Inf. Reg. Graduate of William & Mary College ( age 17 ), Graduated USMA, 1836, 27th in a class of 49. Pre-war iron manufacturer, farmer and in the coal mining trade. Half-brother of Captain Sally Tompkins.

Born at "Poplar Grove". Son of Christopher and Elizabeth Cary Smith Tompkins.Graduated from William and Mary and West Point.Married Ellen Wilkens of Baltimore in 1843.They had four children. Died at his home on Franklin Street in Richmond.
