Dear Brother-
I will try to write you a few lines. We have bad luck. Our sweet little baby Dartha Fay was taken away the 5th to rest in the better land where there will be no more sickness. She had whooping cough and taken pneumonia and she taken worse at five o'clock and died 4:30 that evening. It is awful hard to give her up. But we have to. I know she is at rest, but there is a vacant place that cant' be filled. She was such a sweet pretty baby. She would have been 4 months old today if she would have lived. We buried her out at the Bennett graveyard.
Well the rest is very well. Jase has the toothache this evening. I have the headache some.
Well we are having some pretty weather, but it is hot here. How is it where you are? I guess it is hot enough to roast a goose isn't it?
We went out to Minnie's Thursday evening. The men thrashed grain over in that country, so Jase helped with the thrashing. We came home Saturday evening.
This month started in with bad luck, I think there has been 3 deaths, and one man to go crazy since the 3rd of the month.
Well Earnest, I wish I could see you. Glennie has been to see me. Rosa is at Minnie's now.
Well, I don't know much news to write so I will close for this time.
From your bereaved sister.
Bessie Johnston

I want to thank Ashley for sharing this letter and her family for saving it for so many years. It is so special to see my great grandmother in such a personal way.
