PIONEER CITIZEN GONE

Thomas Brandon died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Massman, in Chariton, on last Saturday, February 24, 1923. He had been active throughout a long life and was one of the best known men of affairs in southern Iowa, and had been engaged in farming, banking and general financing.

During the last several months he had rapidly declined in vitality but until almost the last he had retained his alertness of mind and interest in affairs. Mr. Brandon was the oldest of 11 children and is survived only by an aged sister.

He was born near Greenville, Greene county, Tennessee, on August 26, 1826, his parents being James and Rebecca Brandon. The family name of his mother was Fowler, and these also were natives of Tennessee.

Previous to his coming to Iowa the family had driven out to Scotland county, Missouri from their native Tennessee with slow, plodding oxen. After a short sojourn there they left his mother and the younger members of the family with friends temporarily, and he and his father journeyed to Dodge Point, as known by the Mormon's later, in Appanoose county, where the father entered land. This was on May 10, 1843. But this was before the Mormons had come to the state and that locality was afterwards named Iconium. Mr. Brandon had ever held title to the land his father had entered, and today that is a part of the large Brandon estate.

On September 13, 1849, he was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Barker, near Confidence, in Wayne county. Two children were born to this union, Samuel and Elizabeth, they, with the mother being deceased. His first wife died on March 3, 1854. The son and daughter left families, the son dying in Texas and the daughter in Kansas.

Mr. Brandon was again married on September 11, 1856, to Miss Mary Jane Stephens. They lived a long and happy life together, sharing equally in the toils and joys and sorrows, until she, too, passed away on July 22, 1918. Since then Mr. Brandon has resided with his children.

To this union seven children were born, one son and six daughters, Mrs. Ruthie J. Riggs, of Wichita, Kansas; T. T. Brandon, near Melrose; Mrs. Sarah Martin, Melrose; Mrs. Clara Massman and Josephine Allen, Chariton; Mary Ellen Repp, Albia; and Mrs. Laura Ullem, deceased. There are seventy-two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. All of the surviving children were at the funeral.

A short service was held at the Massman home on Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. Pettit, of the Baptist church, after which the remains were taken to the old home at Iconium. Services were held there in the Methodist church and his body was laid to rest in the family burial plot.
