On 14 August 1862 George enlisted for
three years in Company 1; Fortieth Massachusetts Regiment.
Discharged on 29 March 1863 due to wound.

The funeral of the late George F. Gowen
was held from the residence of his nephew, William W. Gowen.
There were large delegations from E. P. Wallace Post G.A.R; and John A. Douglass Camp Sons of Veterans; as well as many friends and neighbors.
There were many beautiful floral tributes.
Interment in Union Cemetery.
