JOHN D. WARD
John D. Ward was born in Galway County, Ireland, April 21st, 1816 [sic]. He was married October 15, 1837 to Miss Mary Ryan, to which union nine children were born, seven of whom are dead. He leaves surviving him two daughters Mrs. Michael Early and Mrs. Thomas Hefferman [sic] to mourn his loss.
He came from Ireland to the state of New York in 1847 and from there he went to Maryland, Pennsylvania, Iowa and from the latter state to Missouri, in the year of 1859, where he lived on a farm north of Edina until the breaking out of the civil war in 1861, when he joined the 21st Missouri Company D being enrolled July 15, 1861, and served three years and nine months when he was honorably discharged Dec. 5, 1864. He then returned to his farm where he lived until 1884, when he moved to Edina. Here he resided until after the death of his wife, which occurred Feb. 28, 1893, when he left Edina and went to live with his soninlaw [sic], Thomas Hefferman [sic], four miles North of Edina where he died March 20th, 1902.
His remains were taken to St. Aloysius church at Baring where a Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. James J. O'Reilly, after which his remains were laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery of Edina.
The large number who followed the remains to the grave testified to the esteem in which he was held by his friends and neighbors.
