Theatrical Musical Director. His Broadway successes were followed by an Oscar for the 1955 film "Oklahoma!" He was conductor for a long string of hit Broadway musicals, starting with "Oklahoma!" in 1943, followed by "Annie Get Your Gun" in 1946, "Call Me Madam" in 1949, and the stage version of "Snow White" in 1959. In 1955 he had two Oscar nominations for best musical score in a film, one for the film "Guys And Dolls," and one for "Oklahoma!" which won the category. He served as conductor of the St. Louis Municipal Opera from 1937 to 1942, where he was noticed by the legendary Broadway musical team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. He was a member of Bob Hope's first Armed Forces tour in 1948, and occasionally led the Beverly Hills Symphony.
