In 1955 he had two Oscar nominations for best musical score in a film, one for the film "Guys And Dolls," and one for "Oklahoma!" which won the category. He served as conductor of the St. Louis Municipal Opera from 1937 to 1942, where he was noticed by the legendary Broadway musical team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. He was a member of Bob Hope's first Armed Forces tour in 1948, and occasionally led the Beverly Hills Symphony.
