ONE BIG, HAPPY FAMILY--The Greenwells of St. Francis number a dozen and a half - and biscuits for a meal number 70. Preparing 70 biscuits a meal is a normal family duty for Mrs. Joseph Patrick Greenwell of St. Francis, Ky. After all, when there are 16 hungry children [although Sheila, age 4 mos., hasn't quite reached the biscuit-eating stage yet], those biscuits go fast. The 16 Greenwell children aren't always at home-two live in Louisville, one's in the Air Force and a fourth, married, lives in North Madison, In. Even minus four, however, twelve children's mouths and two adults mouths still remain to be fed. The children range in age from 4 mos. to 25 years. The girls outnumber the boys, nine to seven. Mr. & Mrs. Greenwell have had a big naming problem. Sixteen children add up to 32 names, for each child has a middle name. Mary has been employed twice as a first name, once as a second name. To Further complicate matters, each child sports a nickname. Birthdays are another problem. As Mrs. Greenwell says, "There are too many birthdays to do too much celebrating." Every month except August and November brings at least one Greenwell birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Greenwell's youthful appearances seem to believe the fact that they have such a large family. She is a young forty-three and he certainly doesn't appear his fifty years. All the Greenwell children, except the last one, were born at home-and all have survived to this day. Mrs. Greenwell thankfully says, "For a large family, we've been very healthy." Maybe it's the home cooking that keeps the children in such a healthy state. "Mom cooks well-no complaints," the older children say. At meal-time, one table is not sufficient for the whole brood-so the family divides up at two simultaneous tables. Separation is often the necessary rule of the day-especially Sunday, when the family must attend three different masses. Sleeping accommodations are taken care of dormitory-style. The boys sleep in one room, the girls in another. During the school year, 6 of the children attend elementary classes and two go to high school. Having only four children at home means comparative peace for Mrs. Greenwell. The older children help around the house. "If they didn't, I couldn't quite make it", their mother admits. As playmates, the children have occasional spats, like all kids, but they get along together. Julia Bells, the eldest, reveals, "Our slogan is, ‘The more the merrier'". And it's a merry family indeed.
