Garthan was born on June 27, 1923 in Neshoba Co. Miss.
His parents were Thomas Blakley Wilson (b.5-8-1890 in Union, Miss. and d.6-21-1923 House, Miss., just six days before Garthan was born. On the death certificate it says, "Shot and killed by Vurnon Windham [colored man] in Neshoba Co.) and Alma Smith Wilson (b.7-19-1897 Wilson, Louisiana and d.7-19-1923 in Jackson at the "old" Baptist Hospital, before the "new" Baptist Hospital was built directly across the street on North State Street, just three weeks after Garthan was born).
Garthan was later adopted by his maternal aunt, Naomi Eugenia Smith Maulding and uncle, William Henry Maulding of Byrum/Jackson, Miss.,(both now deceased). Garthan was a longtime resident in the Jackson area.
His grandparents were Thomas Benton "Sim" Wilson (b.3-22-1862, married 4-9-1889 Neshoba Co., d. 4-14-1889) and Alice Vivian Richardson Wilson both of Neshoba Co. Mississippi.
He was a graduate of Hinds Junior College and a member of the First Baptist Church of Byram, and was employed as a linotype operator for Hederman Brothers.
Garthan was also was a veteran of WWII, serving in Europe as a tank (nicknamed "Gertie") operator with an honorable discharge.
His survivors include his wife, Corabel Johnson Maulding; three sons, Jim Milton Maulding, Johnny Monroe Maulding, and Steve Henry Maulding; three sisters, Sybil Hodges (Houston, Texas), Catherine Miller (Amite) and Billie Rae Maulding Roeling (New Orleans, LA), one brother, Tommy B. Wilson, Jr. of Tylertown, Miss. and one second cousin, Robert W. McPhail, Sr. of Clinton/Jackson, Miss. area.
