WINSTON-SALEM - Donald Gray Barneycastle peacefully passed away on Monday, March 21, 2011. He was born May 26, 1934 in Forsyth County to Gray Monroe and Gladys Seivers Barneycastle. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kentworth Barneycastle. Don is survived by his wife, Sally Thomasson Barney-castle. Don and Sally were married July 3, 1954. They have two daughters and their families: Charles and Anna Barneycastle Hilton, their children, Christina and Thomas; and William A., Jr. (Billy) and Donna Lynn Barneycastle Comer and their child, Gray; Don's sister, Georgia Barneycastle Kennedy Brown, her children and Don's nieces and nephews are Kenneth and Stephanie Kennedy and Katlyn, Todd and Laura Kennedy Hedrick and Erin, Tim and Jewell Brown Landreth and Joshua of Thomasville and Bill Brown of Owatonna, Minnesota. An active member at Oak Grove Moravian Church, Don helped with the boy scouts, youth activities and served as an elder and trustee for many years. He was active on the graveyard committee and he belonged to the men's bible class. Don retired from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 32.37 years of service. He worked making/machine maintenance. In his time off, Don and his family enjoyed camping and traveling cross country with multiple families and friends. Later in life, he spent his retirement years at the coast. Fishing and boating were his favorite pastimes. His family and friends frequently joined them there for weekends year round at the beach. Well known for his ability to tell a story, Don was the key to many tales of adventures. His love of life made him an active participant. His stories were from tales of the fifties as a young man to stories of family fun, grandchildren, camping, fishing and other practical jokes from over the years. If ever there was a family man, Donald Gray was the true definition. No matter what you called him: "son, husband, brother, daddy, uncle, granddaddy, or friend," he would be there for you. His family will receive friends at Salem Funeral Home on Main Street on Thursday evening, March 24, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Oak Grove Moravian Church at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 25, with a graveside burial to follow. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Moravian Church Graveyard Fund, 120 Hammock Farm Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27105.
