He was a crew member of a B-24 Liberator bomber known as the "Celhalopdos" (see photo). On 15 Feb 1943, they flew out of Gambia, Libya, on a mission to bomb harbor facilities in Naples, Italy. Their aircraft was last seen flying low with both inboard engines out. The entire crew of 10 was lost.
