Yara Bernette (real name Bernette Epstein) was born in 1920 in Boston, USA; her family, of Russian immigrants, had a strong musical background. They moved soon to Brazil, where she acquired the citizenship. She started her piano lessons with her uncle, the famous Josef Kliass, who had studied with Liszt's pupil Martin Krause (who also taught Claudio Arrau and Edwin Fischer). In 1972 Mme. Bernette was unanimously chosen, among 130 candidates, as Piano Professor at the Hamburg Music and Performing Arts School; she remained there for 20 years and her students came from the most different countries like United States, England, Switzerland, Holland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Israel, Rumania and many Brazilians.
