Albert Ree Bates, 94, of 11170 Chatham Road of the Mountain Valley section, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born Sept. 25, 1913, in the Mineola section of Pittsylvania County to Alice Green Bates Adkins.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 72 years, Annie Myers Bates; four brothers, Monsie Bates, William Bates, Charlie Bates and Woodrow Adkins; two sisters, Anna B. Johnston and Annie Bates; and three grandsons.
Since 1949, he and his wife had owned/operated Bates Grocery in the Mountain Valley section of the county. He and his wife were honored by the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control in 2004 for more than 50 years of operating his Mountain Valley business without a single violation of the state's alcohol sales laws. He had other business ventures during his working years, including a store in Callands, a store in Chatham, car sales, oil sales, home building and sawmilling.
He was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are two daughters, Betty Blankenship of Axton and Irene Kennedy of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.; four sons, Leonard Bates, Henry Bates, Junior Bates and Carroll Bates, all of Axton; 13 grandchildren,14 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at Norris Funeral Services and Crematory with Dean Ashby, Ricky Bates and Bill Bates officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:30 p.m. today at Norris Funeral Services and other times at the residence.
