Daniel James Hayes was born on April 4, 1980 in Dallas, Texas. He was the first of two sons born to his parents.
While living in Roselle, Illinois Dan was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) when he was six years of age. His family moved to Colorado in the summer of 1989. Dan began attending First Christian Church (now known as Englewood Bible Church) in March of 1990. Dan was active in AWANA, the youth group, hosting a college group Bible study, serving on the Mission Committee, and bowling on the church bowling league. Dan went whitewater rafting and rappelling while he was in the youth group. Dan was active in his church until he was no longer physically able to attend. He then began a ministry of intercessory prayer for his church and church family.
Dan graduated from Green Mountain High School in 1999. He received an Associate of Arts degree in Graphic Design from Westwood School of Technology in 2001. He was privileged to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from the Rocky Mountain Bible College in 2007.
Dan was one of Jerry Lewis' kids and was helped by the Muscular Dystrophy Association through regular clinic visits and summer camp in Empire, Colorado. Dan loved going to MDA Summer Camp. The MDA also helped with adaptive equipment needs as his disease progressed. He was also active in giving back to this organization and served as the Colorado MDA Goodwill Ambassador in 1995 and 1996. He made appearances around the state, was in several MDA commercials with Jake Jabs, and participated on two Denver Labor Day Telethons. He also, on occasion, talked with other boys who were diagnosed with DMD. Dan was always willing to talk to others about his disease and share how his faith helped him cope each and every day.
Dan was told that if he lived to be sixteen that he would have lived a long-time. Dan took this as a challenge to prove the doctors wrong. While he could still walk, Dan was able to enjoy camping on Galveston, Texas beach, bike riding, water skiing, and snow skiing. At age nine, Dan began using a wheelchair to get around. He still led a very active life. He traveled with his family to Florida and went to Disney World; he traveled to the Bahamas and swam with the dolphins, and enjoyed an Alaskan Cruise with the Knothole Gang. He went with his dad and Uncle Richard to Rockies Spring Training in Tucson, Arizona and saw the Grand Canyon on the way back home. Dan was an avid sports fan and loved all the Colorado teams and enjoyed attending many games throughout the years. His last time at Coors Field he was privileged to go down on the field and meet Todd Helton and other Rockies support staff.
Dan lived to be 30+ years of age but as you can see he packed a lot of activity into those years. Dan really enjoyed building relationships with the people he met. You are here today, family and friends, because of your relationship with Dan. After visiting with someone Dan would typically ask how he could pray for them. His prayer time and prayer list grew longer as Dan grew older. Dan was a prayer warrior.
Dan had good care throughout his life. His Doctors became his friends as they treated him through the years. He was grateful to the many caregivers who came into his home to help him each day and to tend to his medical needs. You helped him to achieve his goal to live a full life and live at home with his parents. A big thanks you to all of you!
His family remembers that Dan had a great smile and a positive attitude that was infectious. He faced life's adversity with grace, courage, and faith. His life impacted everyone he met and people around the world as his story was shared. He did not consider himself handicapped but rather "handicapable." He loved his family dearly, he cared for his friends unfailingly, and he was humbled that Jesus loved him enough to die for him. Today, we gather to remember Dan's life here with us and to celebrate the life he now enjoys with Jesus and other believers who have gone on before him. Those who knew and loved Dan will miss him but we look forward to that day when we shall join him in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
