Irene Hollis Abston, age 92, a resident of Hot Springs, AR, died on March 11, 2011. Mrs. Abston was born in Cleveland, MS. She graduated from Boyle High School in 1938. She married Mack Abston shortly after graduation. Together they owned and operated the Abston Apartments for many years.

Mrs. Abston was employed by Baxter Laboratories Inc. for 13 years. She left Baxter to become a Registered Nurse. After getting her degree she was employed At East Bolivar County Hospital in Cleveland, Ms, Care Inn Nursing Home and later was employed as a Practical Nursing Instructor for the LPN program. She always referred to teaching that program as the most rewarding experience of her nursing career of twenty three years.

Mrs. Abston and her husband relocated to Clinton, MS in 1976. She was employed at the Methodist Hospital. After retirement she worked as a private duty nurse in the Jackson area.

Mrs. Abston's husband, Mack died in 1995. She was also preceded in death by her father, Eugene Hollis; her mother, Jenny Crawford Hollis; five half sisters; three half brothers and one brother, Ethel Hollis Newman, Lila Horn Sharp, Alice Hollis Dowe, Elma Horn Hollis, Pearl Hollis Mobley, Charlie Hollis, Josh Horn, Lige Horn; and a brother, Ira (Buddy) Hollis. Mrs. Abston was also preceded in death by her beloved granddaughter, Amy Rochelle Abston.

Mrs. Abston is survived by two sons and a daughter, Horace Mack Abston of Monroe, LA, Donald Eugene Abston of Baton Rouge, LA and Elizabeth Abston Martin of Hot Springs, AR. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be 10 am Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Breeland Funeral Home in Canton, MS with chapel services at 11 am. Burial will be at Delta Heights Memorial Gardens, Cleveland, MS, at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, March 16. Dr. Fred Womack will officiate at both services.
