Forrest Leroy Abell

Forrest Leroy Abell, age 92, of Birdseye, passed away at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 23, 2012 at his residence in Birdseye.

He was born December 28, 1919 in Petersburg, Indiana to William Thomas and Mary Ethel (Hilborn) Abell. He was united in marriage to Helen Virginia Pfaff on October 6, 1945 in English, Indiana. Forrest retired from the Huntingburg Machine Works where he worked for 40 years. He was a member of: Birdseye Christian Church where he was a former Elder and Board Chairman, V.F.W. Post #2366, life member of the Disabled American Veterans in Jasper, Order of the Eastern Star #590 in Birdseye, and a life member of Bethlehem Masonic Lodge #574 in Birdseye. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1940-1945. He was stationed with the 141st Armored Signal Co. and participated in the Italian and North African campaigns. Forrest was preceded in death by: one brother, Clarence Abell; and two sisters, Ruby E. Tate and Lula Morton.

He is survived by:
His wife of 66 years, Helen Virginia Abell – Birdseye, IN,
Two daughters and two son-in-laws,

Ava (Rick) Gehlhausen – Ferdinand, IN,
Ann Leigh (Michael) Deel – Birdseye, IN
Two brothers,

William O. Abell – Evansville, IN
Richard W. Abell – Leesburg, FL

His brother-in-law,
Farrel Pfaff – Chandler, IN
by (5) grandchildren and (3) great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Forrest Abell will be held at 1:00 p.m., E.S.T., on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg with burial to follow in Mentor Cemetery near Birdseye. Pastor Ron Hickman will officiate the services. The V.F.W. Post #2366 Memorial Detail will conduct military graveside rites.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 2:00-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday. The Jasper D.A.V. will conduct a memorial service at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at the funeral home, followed by a memorial service held at 7:00 p.m. by the Bethlehem Masonic Lodge #574. Memorial contributions may be made to: Birdseye Order of the Eastern Star or Birdseye Christian Church.
