Funeral rites for Dr. William Edgar Box were performed February 22, 1969 at Hutson Chapel where his body reposed overnight. The Rev. Watkins officiated and burial was in the family plot of the Masonic Cemetery.
Following a lengthy period of debilitation and 10 days in Newton Hospital, he died there February 21, 1969. His parents were Lucinda Vaughn and Simeon Alexander Box, and he was one of eight children of whom four survive.
Dr. Box would have been 83 on July 11, was a native of Quitman, and had resided in Newton since 1931. He began general practice of medicine here and moved his family here from Poplarville, but he was stricken with multiple sclerosis in 1933. Since that time he has lived in quiet retirement at the family home, 407 South Main Street. Mrs. Hilda Neal Box died Feb. 23, 1962, and thereafter a daughter Mrs. J. M. Campbell resided with her father. Dr. and Mrs. Box celebrated their 50th wedding anniversity in August, 1961.
The physician received his medical training at Mobile Medical School of the University of Alabama and belonged to the doctor era when diagnosis was done without benefit of modern laboratory equipment. He had been a member of the official Board, Newton Methodist Church, actice and honorary, a Mason, and had membership in state, regional and national associations. He was well read and mantained interest in citizenship duties.
Dr. Box leaves the daughter, Mrs. Licille Campbell, Newton; two sons, W. E. Box Jr. of Omaha, Neb., and John Box of New Orleans, La.; 10 grandchlidren, including Mrs. Ann Campbell Cook of Ft. Rucker, Ala., whom he and Mrs. Box helped rear after her father's death; 5 great-grand children; two brothers, Sam E. Box of Laurel and J. A. Box of Bogalusa, La.; two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Chalk of Meridian and Mrs. Bessie Dabbs of Quitman; a number of nephews and nieces.
Active pallbearers include Ross Holmes, Johnny McMillian, C. D. Beeman, Truman Walton, George Nicholson and Porter Brown. Honorary bearers were Dr. Omar Simmons, Dr. N. W. Todd, Dr. A. P. Boggan, Dr. D. D. Austin and Dr. J. D. Wakham.
