Mary Christmas Van Winkle played guitar and harmonica during her youth in a musical group with her niece and nephew. The group once played on the radio in Modesto.

She was a clerk in the home economic department at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds for about 50 years. She also worked for the Sonora Elks Lodge as a dishwasher for more than 60 years, for many people in the Sonora community as a housekeeper and for De Marcus Brown, theatrical director from the University of the Pacific, during summer productions in Columbia.

Mrs. Van Winkle was survived by a daughter, a granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Van Winkle; son David Van Winkle; brothers, Fred, Reuben, Charles, Norman and Johnny Plummer; and sisters, Lily, Lula and Ada Plummer.
