He was a physician, natural philosopher, physiologist, abolitionist, inventor and poet. His writings included an early understanding of of evolution which his grandson, Charles Darwin, developed later. His work encompassed botany, zoology, education of women, cosmology and physics. He was part of the prominent Darwin family, which includes his sons Doctor Robert Waring Darwin and Sir Francis Sacheverel Darwin and grandsons Charles Darwin and Sir Francis Galton. He was also a founding member of the Lunar Society of Birmingham, which included great thinkers of the times. Matthew Boulton, Erasmus Darwin, Thomas Day, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, Samuel Galton, Jr., James Keir, Joseph Priestley, William Small, Jonathan Stokes, James Watt, Josiah Wedgwood, John Whitehurst, William Withering and Benjamin Franklin, when he was in the country, were members. He was married twice and had 14 children by 3 women. His first wife, Mary Howard, had 5 children. After Mary's death in 1770, he had two children by his governess, Mary Parker. In 1775, he married Elizabeth Pole, daughter of the Second Earl of Portmore. He moved his family to Elizabeth's home, Radbourne Hall and she bore him seven more children. Shortly before his death he had moved into the Breadsall Priory mansion. The Erasmus Darwin House, Beacon Street, Lichfield, Staffordshire is now a museum open to the public.
Erasmus Darwin was buried in Breadsall Church by the side of Erasmus (his son) as he had wished. Elizabeth stayed on at the Priory until her death in 1832, her greatest joy being in filling the house with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Darwin's spirit lived on here, typified by a bizarre, colourful coda: in 1877, when alterations to the church exposed the family graves, his granddaughter Elizabeth Wheeler recorded, "my grandfather's coffin had burst open and his remains were visible and in perfect preservation. He was dressed in a purple velvet dressing gown and his features unchanged. " ["The Lunar Men: The Friends who made the Future" by Jenny Uglow, 2002).
