Attorney-general of the State of Ohio, born in Jefferson County, Ohio. The son of, a struggling carpenter, Samuel Pillars and Charlotte Potts. His mother was a Virginian of English descent.

For a short time in childhood he lived in Carroll County and then the family moved to the village of Risden, where his mother died when he was 8 years old.

At the age of 16 he began teaching school and by hard work prepared himself for an academic course completing his education at Heidelberg College, Tiffin. He read law in the office of his brother, James Pillars, and was admitted to the bar before turning 21 and commenced his practice in Lima, OH in 1855.

In the fall of 1877, Mr. Pillars was elected Attorney-general for Ohio by the Democratic party. Until 1864 he had been connected to the Republican party.

In February 1866 he married Miss Susan Fickle, of Lima, OH; in February 1870 his wife died and he remained unmarried.

He had three children, James, Theodora and Stuart that survived to adulthood. He had one other child, Pearl, who died at the age of 18 months.

Mr. Pillars was originally interred in the 'Old Lima Cemetery", now defunct. That cemetery was closed in 1968 and all monuments/tombstones were moved to Woodlawn. This information comes from an article in the Lima News, Nov 12, 1972.
