Emily Coombs Amesbury died Sunday night, May 3, about 6 o'clock, at her home on First Street, Marcellus. She had been ill since February, much better at times, but failed the last two weeks. She was born in Drayscott, England, on March 21, 1834, and came to America when about 17. The family comprised six other children and they came one at a time, relocating about Marcellus and Skaneateles, the parents remaining in England.
In early life she was married to George Vokes, who met sudden death soon after, leaving a baby daughter, who died when a young woman. The deceased later married James Amesbury, who died 16 years ago, and their only daughter, Ella Amesbury Walsh died in 1889. So her life has been saddened, her later days devoted to the interests from the infancy of the only son of their daughter, James Eli Walsh who survives with a sister, Mrs. William Brock, and a brother, John Coombs of Skaneateles.
The funeral was at the house at 2:30 Wednesday, with Rev. R.B. Cook officiating, with interment in a family plot in Highland. Many friends sent flowers, and much sincere mourning was manifest for the passing of this estimable character. The bearers were: Isaac Richards, John Cooper, Charles Brown, and William Nighingale Jr. She became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, on October 20, 1878, and has been among its supporters. Her heart was responsive in answer to the highest appeals of the master's servants. Her presence in the house of God was an inspiration. By this circle she will be especially missed.
