Albert Scholer Shoots Himself With .22 Rifle

Dies This Morning at Union City Hospital: Was Despondent

Apparently despondent over illness, Albert Scholer, 59, a well known Madison township farmer, shot himself in the head about 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon dying at the Union City hospital where he was taken after being found at about 5 o'clock this morning.
At the time the despondent man shot himself he was at home, two and one-half miles east of Salamonia. The weapon used was a .22 caliber target rifle. He was alone at home, his wife being at the home of her brother, Herbert McLaughlin.
Mr. Scholer told his wife he would come after her, but when he failed to do so she walked home, a short distance. Arriving there and seeing nothing of him, she began a search and found standing up in the pantry holding the gun. When she spoke to him and took a hold of him he fell down, but she succeeded in getting him into another room. She said he was unconscious for a short time and answered when spoke to, but soon lapsed into unconsciousness.
D. H. H. Jones, of Salamonia, was called and rushed Mr. Scholer to the hospital in Union City. The bullet intered his right temple and no hope of recovery was held by Dr. Jones at the time.
Mr. Scholer suffered a nervous breakdown about three years ago, from which he never recovered. It is said that he also worried about the death of a son and never been reconciled.
Albert Scholer was born May 26, 1877, the son of Henry and Anna (Wuethich) Scholer and at the time of death was 59 years, 5 months and 29 days of age.
Surviving besides the widow, Leah, are the following brothers and sisters; Henry Scholer, northeast of Portland; Jacob Scholer, southeast of Portland; Mrs. Fred Schell, Portland; Mrs. A. C. Hilfiker, Salamonia; Charles Scholer, Indianapolis; Edward Scholer, Lewisville, Ind.; Fred Scholer, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Ida Darling, Whittier, Calif.; Walter Scholer, Laffayette, Ind. Two brothers are dead. One son, Marvin E. died several years ago. It is said he grieved greatly over the loss of this son.
Funeral services will likely be held Friday afternoon, awaiting word from relatives in California. The body was brought to the Williamson funeral home in this city, but will be taken to the home tonight.
