Nelson Frazier Gabbert
June 23, 1937 – February 28, 2011

Nelson Frazier Gabbert was born in Clyde, Texas on June 23, 1937. Nelson was the son of the late Ira Gabbert and the late Lucille (Hester) Gabbert. After high school Nelson attended college for one year on a football scholarship. He was also a Golden Glove Boxer. Nelson served his country honorably as a member of the United States Navy for more than twenty-two years. He obtained the rank of E-9 as a Senior Master Chief.

He married the former Phyllis Steinman on June 11, 1983 in Monroe.

Nelson worked hard in construction management for twenty-five years retiring in 2001. He worked on many projects over the years including well known ones such as Yellow Creek Nuclear, Fermi II, Mazda, Detroit Metro Airport, and General Motors.

Nelson had two loves in life his family and his country. He had a big heart especially when it came to his children, but even they knew not to cross him. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, watching college football, and traveling for work or pleasure. Nelson was a member of the VFW Post 3943 in Newport, the Matt Urban American Legion Post in Monroe, and the VVA 142.

Nelson Frazier Gabbert age 73 of Monroe passed away at 9:00pm, Monday, February 28, 2011 at home. In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by son: Nelson Colton Gabbert; daughter: Catherine Russom; and brother: Joe Gabbert.

His memory will forever be cherished by his wife: Phyllis of Monroe; a daughter: Cheryll (Eric) Wuelfing of Morris Chapel, TN; four stepchildren: Denise (Jim) Kukwa of Monroe, Richard (Sandy) Steinman of Carleton, Joseph Steinman of Monroe, and Andrea (Ron) Morris of Monroe; one brother: Wayne (Julia) Gabbert of Vernon, TX; one sister: Monteen Gabbert of Fulton, TX; twelve grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Friends may gather from 2:00-8:00pm, Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe (734) 384-5185 with an American Legion Post 40 Veterans Service at 7:00pm. A Celebration of His Life will be held at 11:00am, Friday, March 4, 2011 also at Merkle's. The Rev. Louie Barnett of Eagles Nest Community Church will officiate and procession will follow to Roselawn for burial. Graveside services will be under the auspices of Monroe VFW Post 1138.

Memorial donations in Nelson's name are suggested to Vets, Inc. of Monroe or to Mercy Memorial Hospice.
