Israel, a son of Mercer Sayre and Margaret Winget, was a painter by trade. He was born in Monroe Co., Ohio in 1834. He accompanied his family when they moved to Wetzel Co., WV.

Israel worked as a laborer in West Virginia. After he became an adult, he struck out and moved to Bloomfield, Davis Co., Iowa where he was listed in the 1860 Federal Census living with his father in law. He had married Irena Ficklin, a daughter of William and Irena Ficklin. Irena died at the age of 19 years, 11 months.

In 1892, at the age of 58 years, Israel, his second wife and two children, along with his brother packed their belongings and were traveling overland on their way to Suislaw Bay where they intended to take up government land and make a home. Israel, who was suffering from lead poisoning made it as far as Medford, Jackson Co., OR where he suddenly took a turn for the worse, dying on a Sunday about 12:00.

He and his wife were both members of the ME Church in Iowa. Upon Israel's death, the ME Church in Medford provided the funeral services. The family, being nearly penniless, were unable to pay for the burial. Since Israel was a member of the IOOF, as well as Knights of Pythias, the local members of the lodges provided a decent burial for Israel and provided the family with enough funds to keep the wolf from the door.

Israel is buried in Block 48, Lot 2, Space 3. I was told the only notation of his grave is "Sayre".
