Youngest of six children of Thees and Catherina Margaret "Ada" Helmer Gerken, Johann (John) was born in Granstedt, Königreich, Hanover. He immigrated to New York with sister Margaretha & his widowed mother in 1885. His twin sister, N. N. Gerken, was stillborn and is buried in Granstedt. John died of a series of heart attacks, the last in his farm home west of Sibley.

John married Johanna Helena Adelgunda Witt in Sibley on February 28, 1907. They had three children.

He became a tenant for Sibley Estates where he farmed for over 30 years. The year before his death, with son John T. as co-farmer, he began a beef cattle feeding operation from a large, newly built barn. John felt great satisfaction and pride to be trusted with the new project by the Estate.

John was a dedicated member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church of Sibley where he served on the Building Fund committee for the brick church built in 1922. He also served as the church treasurer the last 14 years of his life.
